Not long ago I was approached by some of my fellow 1st year juniors in Dental Faculty. They wanted me to share about the Indonesian dental student association or the PSMKGI. I told them about a bunch of stuffs that the organization do. And then they told me that they wanted to do more action and that they want to get involve much more in anything else. They were so thirsty of social experience.
So I decided to tell them what I do in my spare time which is doing certain social project which includes Dental Health Education or DHE. And then suddenly they want me to organize a DHE event and that they would like to get involved.
Then after they left I did a little bit of brainstorming session with myself. And not long after that I suggested the gang of juniors to form a small committee of 8 to 10 people.
I drew out a brief of rundown for them. Then I divided the juniors to certain duties. 3 people in charge of the DHE lecture, 2 in the Brushing Teeth Together and then another junior will assist me while I do some oral screening for the children.
At first the gang of juniors didn’t know what to do and was not confident enough, but I let them to take the courage and work their guts out. Days before the event, I assigned them tp buy some toothpastes. I let them be creative and take control.
And finally it comes the day. The day where we are going to do the dental health project. I picked up a spot at Rumah Baca FWE, a small learning center for kids below the age of five.
Early in the morning on the 29th of March 2014, the jumiors gathered in my apartment and left for the DHE. Rumah baca FWE was near the Batavia Apartment notfar from RSAL mintoharjo which is still apart of Benhil, Jakarta. Sadly we could not go nu pur institution name, so I told them what we,re going to do is going to be done under the Indonesian Youth Health Ambassadors
As we arrived at the place I did a small introduction with the children as we were all so greeted well. And then not long the event went on by itself without me being crazy about it.
As we finished the DHE, we gave a little quiz and also some snacks. Luckily one of my juniors voluntarily donate some toys for the children.
Even though there were only like 20 to 25 kids, both the children and my juniors learned something. I am very proud and amazed by how each and every one of my juniors handled things.
What I am trying to teach them was that to make a social project is actually very easy and that they could do it anytime as long as they are willing to.
